Sun Devil Classic 2023

Welcome to the 2023 Sun Devil Classic and the Collegiate SW CUP. We are SUPER glad you are here with us and have chosen this competition to attend. It makes a HUGE difference in so many college kids lives. But it also has many residual effects such as the development of much needed coaches in our sport- many of whom are back here coaching teams today!

We hope you not only have a great competition but also a great stay in our beautiful state. There are many things to do and we hope you take advantage of something enjoyable and memorable. Click here for some things to do

Have a great weekend and good luck to all the gymnasts- and …

KEEP LOOKIN’ UP!

How we started

ASU Men’s gymnastics has a rich tradition that goes back to the 1960’s when the team was started as a club program. In 1968 ASU hired Don Robinson and it became an NCAA D1 Team. Coach Robinson spent the next 25 years developing ASU gymnastics (both Men & Women) into a household name in the gymnastics world.

This meet started out in the humble gym of PE West on the ASU campus with about 120 boys. This weekend we will have over 2,000 M&W athletes competing in this grand Rawhide Event Center. Competing over this 5 day event will be 51 men’s and 35 women’s teams from states all around the country. We even have a team from Sonora, Mexico. Bienvenidos!

It is because of you and your team  being here supporting this growing event which has grown to be one of the top Men’s and Women’s gymnastics meets in the country that makes today GREAT. THANK YOU!

WHY we R here….

One of our team quotes that drive us is:

THE MAIN THING IS TO KEEP

THE MAIN THING THE MAIN THING!

We were an NCAA team from 1968- 1993 when the university cut our funding. Instead of quitting (which we knew would be bad for gymnastics as a whole), we put together a group of individuals that decided we should FIGHT for what is good in this sport and tried everything possible to raise enough money to have a season in 1994. That year we raised $12k and made that budget work!  Like this meet, our team and its needs have continued to grow quite large. But now instead of a team of 7 (1996) we now have 50 gymnasts training and we are able to field 2 teams (ie- Varsity and JV) of 15 each. This gives many young men the opportunity to get an education and continue in the sport they love.  Now with the growth of GymACT  many more have the opportunity to experience being a part of a collegiate program- growing in their pursuit of perfecting their skills, developing life-long relationships, learning life skills, teamwork and all the benefits of being on a GymACT team.

WHO WE ARE…

We have been known as the Arizona State University Gymnastics Team since 1968. A part of the NCAA from ‘68- ‘93 and then as a non-funded Club for the last 30 years. Right now we are in the process of dealing with issues with ASU as to our status as a club and therefore have decided at this point to change our name to ARIZONA STATE GYMNASTICS (ASG) with new colors of Maroon and Gray until those issues get resolved. Even though 40 of our team members are full time students at ASU, we are currently NOT associated with ASU.  BUT, nothing other than that has changed… Same coaching staff, philosophy, training gym, training and competition schedules & opportunities.

  • We have a Non-profit organization (501(c)(3) with a great board of directors that help lead and guide our team. We appreciate their time, vision and care as they lead us with the following mission:

The mission of the Arizona State Men’s Gymnastics TEAM

is to construct a solid foundation upon which

our student athletes can build successful lives.

  • What our Non-profit supports:
    • The Arizona State Men’s Gymnastics Team (80% of the team members attend ASU; 20% attend Community College or are in trade schools)
    • The Grand Canyon University M&W Gymnastics Club Teams
    • The ASU Women’s Gymnastics Club Team
  • Please visit our Meet Vendors who are here to support this sport. Let them know we appreciate them adding to the culture of our competitions.
  • WIN a Balance Board. Our team uses this to train sticking their landings. Stop by the ASG Team table and try to balance on it yourself and get a free entry to the drawing for a free board. Great for at home training too.
  • Shoutouts and CandyGrams are a great way to show your child you care … even IF they don’t have such a great meet! 🙂
  • This weekend’s schedule: We have a packed schedule of gymnastics and hope you enjoy every bit of being here. From the competition & time with good friends to good food and a good hike on S Mountain (10 min away).
  • Your suggestions on your experience here this weekend are appreciated as we are always looking to make what we do better. Feel free to email me at Scott.sundevilgym@gmail.com
